Scope of Position (i.e. projects involved with and role within group): Development scientist in the new business development group responsible for developing new product designs utilizing Corning glass for new applications in the Architecture and Solar markets. This position has broad interaction with program managers, technology managers, commercial resources, customer technical resources, process experts, and engineering receivers. The candidate will be expected to lead significant portions of the development product and process development. Work location is Corning NY, USA.
Day to Day Responsibilities: - Development, assessment and scale:up of new product and process designs. - Works closely with commercial to understand customer needs and translate to glass and laminate product requirements. - Early customer engagement, sample and prototype generation for proof of concept and evaluation samples - Identify product designs, materials (glass, adhesive, substrate), process technology to meet product and cost requirements. - Develops deep understanding of customer and industry specifications for target market and assesses product capability to meet the required standards. Develops product and process specifications. - Works with reliability resources on assessment and evaluation for product reliability and qualification. - Collaborates with resources from various disciplines to support the program (research, engineering, manufacturing, characterization, analysis, modeling, capabilities). - Uses Design of Experiments and first principle knowledge to develop and improve products and processes. - Effective documentation of experiment plans, internal reports, operating procedures, specifications, decision analysis, and process changes. - Defines opportunities for intellectual property creation and files invention disclosures and patent applications. - Work with company resources to assure a safe work environment for current and new processes, and compliance to Corning's environmental policy.
Travel Requirements (please note if international): 10:20 domestic and international travel.
Hours of work/work schedule/flex:time: Standard full:time daytime hours.
Education and Experience (minimum required for consideration) - Education: PhD preferred, M.S. minimum in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or Physics - Experience: 5+ years in technical role involving product and process development of integrated product systems
Required Skills (These are skills that candidates MUST possess) - Product and process development experience - Knowledge of fundamental principles of mechanics, materials science, and optics. - Knowledge and experience working with integrated system designs, glass materials, and laminates. - Ability to translate early stage customer needs/wants into product and process development requirements and test plans - Effective communication and presentation skills to all levels in the organization - Commitment to drive for results with minimal supervision
